Such A Sad Love

"Such A Sad Love"
acrylic on birch panel
5 x 7 inches framed to 6.5 x 8.5 inches
2016
$270.00
email gallery1988melrose@gmail.com for purchase inquiries

Here's my piece for "30 Years Later", opening tonight at Gallery 1988 in LA.
My painting is based not only on Labyrinth's Sir Didymus and Jareth (one of my favorite childhood/teenage movies) but a tribute to my fallen hero, David Bowie.
His recent death was such a blow, even though nothing can ever touch his legacy, and the impact that he made on my young life.

Sonic and Tails

"Sonic and Tails"
acrylic and metallic acrylic paint on wooden pixel heart
12 x 12 x .75 inches
$800.00
2016
available HERE

For "Pixel Hearts" show at Gallery 1988, curated by Chogrin.

For this show, all the artists were given an identical wooden pixel heart canvas and asked to create a piece inspired by video games.  For mine I chose Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails because I really wanted to recreate them in my style.

Truth be told, I tried Sonic once at a friend's house as a child, but really I was a Nintendo girl!  Nevertheless it was really inspiring to recreate these characters and the heart panel was a fun, challenging space to work on, and very high quality.

The whole show looks awesome together!

We Are One

"We Are One"
Inspired by The Last Unicorn
acrylic on birch panel
8 x 10 inches, framed
2015
$575.00
For "Crazy 4 Cult 9" at Gallery 1988
available HERE

This is my piece for this year's Crazy 4 Cult, called "We Are One".
I was very excited to be able to pay tribute to a movie that is one of my biggest inspirations since I was a child, "The Last Unicorn".

I wanted to show how the opposing forces of the unicorn and the red bull are like light and shadow; that they cannot exist without each other.
The lavender roses represent rarity and the pink grace and beauty.

Just A Worm

"Just A Worm"
acrylic on birch panel
3.75 inches diameter framed to 7.5 inches diameter
2014
available HERE

Here's my contribution to this year's "Crazy 4 Cult" show that opens 12/12/14 at Gallery 1988 West in Los Angeles.

I chose The Worm from Labyrinth (one of my favorite childhood movies) who so frustratingly miscommunicates to Sarah the direction to the castle.  Personally, this little guy always drove me nuts despite his cuteness, so I decided to focus on making him more adorable.

Formula 86

"Formula 86"
acrylic on birch panel
4.5 x 6.5 inch oval framed to 8.5 x 12 inches
2014
$350.00
inspired by "The Witches"
available HERE

Here's my painting for "The Subtle Art of Pop Culture" at Gallery 1988, opening April 11th, which also marks the 10 year anniversary of the gallery.

We were asked to choose whatever movie we wanted to be inspired to create our piece from, and I chose one of my absolute childhood favorites, "The Witches", starring the gorgeous Anjelica Huston.

Pictured is Liebschen, the Grand High Witch's black cat, and Luke in his mouse form with the bottle of Formula 86, which the witches used to turn children into mice.  Formula 86 was named thusly because it "eighty-sixes" children.

Love, Uncaged

"Love, Uncaged"
inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"
acrylic on birch panel
11 x 14 inches plus frame
2012

Here's the finished painting of my contribution to the Hitchcock themed group show for
Gallery 1988 Venice.
The show opens this Friday, April 13th
214 Pier Avenue
Santa Monica, CA 90405

Here's the progress shots:

I love many Hitchcock movies, and was very inspired by seeing The Birds again recently.

I was going to do something with the obvious choice of crows, but never having painted lovebirds before, and seeing how docile and cute they were in the movie (they were actually the only birds to NOT harm anyone), I decided I would go that route instead.

The lovebirds were a gift from Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) to Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) that were supposed to be for his sister Cathy.  They are present in Bodega Bay for the whole bird attack fiasco, but mysteriously remain docile throughout (except for in my version!).

The flowers, tuberose, signify "Dangerous Love" in floriography (Victorian flower language).

Also, I wanted to add that the final image of the painting is a professional scan, so there may be some prints available in the future! ;)

Crazy 4 Cult Book Signing

Two of my paintings are featured in the new "Crazy 4 Cult" book which just came out yesterday!

This is the first time my work has been included in a published book, so I'm super excited. Gallery 1988 Los Angeles is going to be having an event where people can buy autographed copies of the book, and I'm going to be one of the artists signing the books!

I'll be out in Los Angeles next month for this event as well as the Necropolis show at the Congregation Gallery on July 16th. And.........I get to go to DISNEYLAND!!!

Travis Louie Collaboration!

I am honored to have been asked to do this collaboration with the amazing Travis Louie.

The collaboration will be in his Gallery 1988 show entitled, "The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories" which opens tonight in Los Angeles. I so wish I was in LA for this one, but if you are there, I recommend not missing this show!
