These pieces are based on the term, "survivor", despite the cliched meaning. I've been thinking over the last year about the relationships and stories the beings in my paintings have to the skulls they interact with, and here they represent the one that the beings have survived. Sometimes the things and people we survive mutate us. And I don't mean a scar, because that's too worthless. I'm thinking about how we adapt. Even if we die, the ways we mutate give us powers.

"Florera" and "Stoltsera" are Swedish for "flourish", "flaunt", "thrive" or "live in the prime" of your life.  I wanted these cats who have been mutated by what they survived to not only live, but flourish with their new powers.

They will be showing TONIGHT at Stranger Factory for the opening reception of Winter Salon V in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
There's a terrific lineup of artists, including one of my favorites (and friend!) Carisa Swenson!

We Are One

"We Are One"
Inspired by The Last Unicorn
acrylic on birch panel
8 x 10 inches, framed
2015
$575.00
For "Crazy 4 Cult 9" at Gallery 1988
available HERE

This is my piece for this year's Crazy 4 Cult, called "We Are One".
I was very excited to be able to pay tribute to a movie that is one of my biggest inspirations since I was a child, "The Last Unicorn".

I wanted to show how the opposing forces of the unicorn and the red bull are like light and shadow; that they cannot exist without each other.
The lavender roses represent rarity and the pink grace and beauty.

Consecrating the Talisman

"Consecrating the Talisman"
acrylic on birch panel
4.75 x 4.75 inches framed to 7.5 x 7.5 inches
2015
$250.00
For "Little Big" at Haven Gallery
info@havenartgallery.com or 631.757.0500 for purchase inquiries

Here's my little painting for "Little Big" at the new Haven Gallery.  The show boasts a fantastic lineup of artists creating small works of art, 8 inches and tinier.

For my piece I wanted to concentrate on the concept of consecrating a talisman; the act of making an object sacred, and charging it with power.  I also wanted to touch upon the idea of secrets, and the mysteries hidden from view, especially those secrets we keep from ourselves in our own minds.

I was able to attend the opening reception!
Here's me with my little fox, who was in great company with all the lovely works.  To the right of my painting is "Sentinel" by Michael Ramstead, behind my head is Lea Barozzi, and to the left of that is Kindra Nikole and "In The West" by Kaspian Shore.

Here's a great shot courtesy of the gallery photographer of the owners, and several of us that have work in the show.  Starting on the right are owners Erica Berkowitz and Joseph Weinreb, Janet A Cook, Erich J. Moffitt, Jean Pierre Arboleda, Hannah Faith Yata and myself.

3 Person Show Paintings

Here's my contributions to the three person show opening TONIGHT in Denver, at Sally Centigrade Gallery.
These paintings have been deeply cathartic in their creation and have a lot of personal symbolism.

Moon Guardian

"Moon Guardian"
acrylic on birch panel
8 x 10 inches framed to 12 x 14 inches
2015
$575.00
Available HERE

Here's my painting, "Moon Guardian" for "Celestial", opening July 18th at Alexi Era Gallery.

The show features a lovely lineup of pieces inspired by the ever-inspiring stars.

My ghostly white fox spirit lovingly wraps it's many tails around the moon, the planets keeping company nearby.  The two constellations near the fox are Pieces and Leo; my own two astrological signs.

I was very honored to contribute a piece to this show, as I am always so inspired by the universe, stars and night sky.

Wild Spirit

"Wild Spirit"
acrylic on deep cradled birch panel
12 x 18 inches, unframed
2015
$950.00
Available HERE

Here's my painting, "Wild Spirit" for Gristle Gallery's "Libertine" show, opening Saturday, July 18th in Brooklyn.

I was greatly inspired by the definition of a Libertine; a being unrestrained by moral, religious and sexual boundaries.  I wanted to portray such a being; a fearless spirit that exists outside of the realm of the more timid creatures.
I chose lisianthus flowers to place amongst them as their meaning in Floriography (the Victorian era language of flowers) is "showy".

Moonlight Fawn

Here's my little 5 x 7 inch "Moonlight Fawn" drawing, available HERE on my webstore.
It's the first of what I hope to be several small, affordable drawings available directly through me.

Emanate

"The Fox and The Cat"
acrylic on birch panel
11 x 14 inches plus frame
$800.00
available for purchase HERE

For this painting, I chose to interpret the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, "The Fox and The Cat".  The tale was simple: a fox boasts that he has many tricks and a cat confesses that he has only one.  The fox is caught by hunters and the cat climbs a tree and escapes them.  The tale is supposed to teach that in times of danger, one option is more effective than having many at one's disposal.

I'm not sure how helpful or true that tale is, but I wanted to paint the fox and cat in my own interpretation, so here, the ghostly fox protects the cat; the foxes' skull is seen at the bottom of the painting.  Also, the fox is shown with several tails, like the Japanese kitsune, with each tail representing more luck.

"The Fox and The Cat" will be showing tonight in Alexi Era Gallery's show, Emanate, which is the first at their new location.

Bullies No More

"Bullies No More"
acrylic on birch panel
20 x 20 inches
2015
$1,100.00
info@moderneden.com to purchase

Here's my painting for "Storybook", curated by Michael Cuffe of Warholian for Modern Eden gallery in San Francisco.
For this show, each artist chose a childhood book to reinterpret in their style.  I picked my favorite children's story, "The Littlest Rabbit" by Robert Kraus.  I've loved this simple, illustrated tale since childhood, and not only have used it as inspiration for another painting in the past as well as this one.

In "The Littlest Rabbit", a tiny bunny's life is made miserable by the bigger bunnies just because he's smaller.  When he finally grows, he seeks revenge against his bullies and stands up to protect the new littlest rabbits against their foes.  The title in this piece comes from the line in the book,
"All bullies are cowards!"

In my painting, I wanted to focus on the dark, ominous tone of the book, despite it being a children's story.  My Littlest Rabbit sits between altar candles lit upon the bullies' skulls.  Black magic may have been used to off the foes, who stand guard over him now, in death.

In the book, the Littlest Rabbit was described as being no bigger than a flower, so I wanted to use a lot of Floriographic (the Victorian language of flowers) imagery to compliment elements of the story; sunflowers (the bullies' haughtiness), morning glories (the evanescent loveliness of life), plum blossoms (courage, happiness, perseverance), and iris (promise).

Panda Magic

"Panda Magic"
acrylic on birch panel
16 x 20 inches framed to
22 x 26 inches
2015
$1,000.00
available HERE

Here's my painting, "Panda Magic" for Xiong Mao, opening April 11th at Flower Pepper Gallery in Pasadena, California.  The exhibit is panda themed and boasts an incredible lineup of artists that I've very proud to be showing alongside of.

I chose to depict red pandas with giant panda cubs cuddled upon them, all together gazing into a crystal ball while incense burns.   The bamboo represents strength through pliancy and steadfastness while the magnolias stand for perseverance and beauty in Floriography, the Victorian era language of flowers.  I felt this symbolism was appropriate for the panda as they are strong, wise, beautiful creatures with a rare, special magic.

New Works In Progress

Here's some sneak peeks of a few of the pieces I've been working on...

You can continue to follow my progress on My Instagram, My Facebook page, and personal account.

I've been posting a lot less on here, but I'm quietly progressing my most favorite paintings that I've made in a long time.

For this new year I've really wanted to slow down and make each painting the absolute best I can, so I'm refining both my technique and the narrative that the pieces share.  These paintings share the common environment of a post apocalyptic, human-less world populated by ghost animals and their own figment creatures.  Human skulls and bones are the only reminder of the "Up-rights" as the creatures utilize occult methods of divination and floral symbolism.

The scenes I'm creating in this series are also very personal metaphors; they have to do with overcoming loss, doubt and personal demons and surviving to become even stronger than ever previously thought possible.  Stylistically they combine elements that have been the crux of my visual passions since childhood; sweet simplicity and occult themes.
