Wild Spirit

"Wild Spirit"
acrylic on deep cradled birch panel
12 x 18 inches, unframed
2015
$950.00
Available HERE

Here's my painting, "Wild Spirit" for Gristle Gallery's "Libertine" show, opening Saturday, July 18th in Brooklyn.

I was greatly inspired by the definition of a Libertine; a being unrestrained by moral, religious and sexual boundaries.  I wanted to portray such a being; a fearless spirit that exists outside of the realm of the more timid creatures.
I chose lisianthus flowers to place amongst them as their meaning in Floriography (the Victorian era language of flowers) is "showy".

The Decision

"The Decision"
acrylic on birch panel
4.5 x 6.5 inches oval framed to 8.5 x 12 inches approximately
$350.00
2014
info@gristletattoo.com or 347.889.6422

Here's my painting for Gristle Gallery's "Secret World" show.
"The Decision" is a rather personal painting for me; the symbolism of the fox ghost beast having two heads deals with feeling two ways about something or someone; the feeling of being pulled in two directions at once and having to make a decision.
And sometimes no decision is possible.

I'm honored to have my painting included alongside an incredible lineup of artists' work in this show which also marks the gallery's three year anniversary.

"A Rebirth"
acrylic on birch panel

(SOLD)

Here's one of my newest paintings, "A Rebirth".
A tribute to spring where a white fox sits over the altar of one of the fallen "Uprights" or humans.  Flowers spring forth from the skull, the life cycle beginning again.  Blood drips from the Upright's eye socket and a butterfly perches upon the pink blossoms.

Departure

"Departure"
acrylic on birch panel
8 x 10 inches, framed
2013
$500.00
SOLD

Here's another newly finished painting that is off to it's new home, thanks to one of my new collectors.

Bats perch upon the backs of gray foxes, perched upon human skulls.
The Ouija planchette, the mystical oracle, a portal to communication with the departed, dangles a scrying crystal.  The sweet pea flowers symbolize "departure" in Floriography, the Victorian language of flowers.

A gray fox and a white, arctic fox converge around the pentacle made of pussy willows (representing never-ceasing remembrance in Floriography, the Victorian language of flowers) while an owl sentry flies above, and one perches on a skull below.

Dark and light; as above, so below.

Forest Altar

"Forest Altar"
acrylic and silver leaf on birch panel
8 x 10 inches
2013
inquiries: corylou311(at)yahoo(dot)com

A young red fox sits besides his forest altar while a cardinal rings the altar's bell, with the insignia of the inverted pentagram.  The blue jay observes from below.  Candles burn upon the skull, lighting the night.

The animals are guardians of the occult; their secrets and magic elusive to humanity.

They are invincible ghosts of the forest....

The Peafowl Widow

"The Peafowl Widow"
acrylic on birch panel
11 x 14 inches, oval, framed
2012
email corylou311(at)yahoo(dot)com for inquiries

For Splendor Device's "Hell Hath No Fury" show at Rothick Art Haus

The female peacock (peafowl) may or may not have offered her husband (for revenge?) and is perched upon his skull, holding one of his feathers, while their babies look on.
The pincushion flowers represent widowhood, and the perilla leaves signify "role reversal" in Floriography.  The talisman she wears around her neck is the Protection from Attackers amulet.

The show is curated by Splendor Device and is themed around female wrath/rage and will be traveling to several local galleries.

Huginn and Muninn Print

"Huginn and Muninn Atop the Oracle"
print made from professional scan of the original painting
original 2011 painting is not for sale
12 x 16 inches
archival acid free rag smooth fine art paper by Craine
100% pigmented and archival ink
150+ years life

EDITION of 25
each print is signed/numbered by the artist
white border matte
professionally scanned/printed
2012

This painting depicts Huginn and Muninn, the two ravens (I made them a two-headed raven here) from Norse mythology who fly around the world everyday and report the events to Odin, the chief god. "Huginn" and "Muninn" mean "Thought" and "Memory", respectively.

The imagery also contains tarot cards (The Devil and Death) with the original designs that I have treasured for a long time. They belonged to my parents and I always loved using them as a teenager. The crystal ball oracle contains a goat skull, sometimes a symbol for Satanism.

The flowers, narcissus, represent self interest (hence the name) in Floriography (the Victorian language of flowers) and I felt that was rather appropriate with the other Satanic symbols.

WIP: For My Little One

(almost there!)

Here's my progress so far on "For My Little One".
It's a piece that I've wanted to make for a while; since a horrific scene that I witnessed from my living room window last year.  It all happened so fast that I didn't even really know what happened at first.  I was sitting at my drawing table and heard a loud sound outside.  I looked out to see a hawk with something in it's claws and a squirrel chasing after him.
Apparently the hawk had snatched up a baby squirrel from the power line from where the mother squirrel had it with her.  I screamed and pounded on the window at the hawk, hoping he would let it go, but it flew away before I could run outside.
I could hear the mother squirrel crying from the tree for what seemed like days later.
I know that this is just one of the many natural occurrences in the brutal reality that is nature, but it was so excruciating to see it happen; especially when I had seen the mom running around with the baby in it's mouth the day before.
So, I had been wanting to make a painting where the squirrel gets revenge on the hawk that took her little one, and for it also to look like she's keeping a vigil or visiting it's grave.
She's holding forget-me-nots, which obviously mean "Do not forget me!" and remembrance, and the hawk skull is flanked by peach roses, which symbolize immortality.
